يبدأ هذا المقال باستعراض تفصيلي للتعريفات اللغوية والاصطلاحية لفمهومي 'الموت' و'الروح' كما وردا في المعاجم العربية والآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية. عرَّج المقال كذلك على العلاقة بين الروح والجسد كما فهمها علماء الكلام قديما. والخلاصة الرئيسية للمقال هي أن قبول مفهوم موت الدماغ يعارض ما أجمع عليه علماء الإسلام قديما فيما يتعلق بعلامات الموت.

This article starts with detailed elaborations on the linguistic and technical definitions of the two concepts 'death' and 'soul' as recorded in the Arabic lexicons, the Qur’anic verses and the Prophetic traditions. The author also refers to the body-soul relationship as understood by the early Muslims theologians. The main conclusion of the article is that accepting brain death goes contrary to the consensus of the early Muslim religious scholars about the reliable signs of death.
