Abstract
Abstract Translated
This paper was read during the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) in Kuwait during the period 15-17 January 1985 on the beginning and the end of human life. The author maintains that the early Muslim religious scholars always adopted very strict measures before declaring the death of someone. Thus, brain death should not be seen as an acceptable criterion in Islam because it remains doubtful. However, there is no harm in switching off a life-support machine if the physician deems this to be futile treatment.
