بيدأ هذا المقال بتحرير عدد من المصطلحات الرئيسية منها مفهموم الأكل والشرب والصوم لغة اصطلاحا. ثم يفصل المؤلف عددا من الأحكام الفقهية المتعلقة بصيام المريض في فصلين رئيسيين: الأول يناقش المفطرات في مجال التداوي والثاني يعالج ضابط الإفطار في حال المرض. بجانب المذاهب الفقهية الأربعة عند أهل السنة، يستفيض المؤلف في عرض الآراء الواردة في المذهب الجعفري عند الشيعة الإمامية.

This article starts with explaining a number of central concepts such as eating, drinking and fasting from the linguistics and juristic perspectives. Then the author elaborates on a number of juristic rulings, pertaining to the patient who takes specific medications during fasting, in two main sections. The first section discusses the substances that make fasting void as far as medical treatment is concerned. The second section handles the question, 'When can illness be a legal excuse for not fasting?' Besides the four Sunni schools of law, the author focuses on the opinions within the Jaʻfarī school of the Twelever Shīʻīsm.
