تم تقديم هذا البحث إلى المؤتمر العالمي الثاني عن الطب الإسلامي المنعقد في الكويت في شهر مارس من عام 1982. السؤال الرئيسي الذي يعالجه هذا البحث هو: هل يكفي المسلمون أن يلتحقوا بالركب الحضاري الغربي في طابعه العلمي والتقني والأخلاقي حتى يمكن السير معه أم أن 'الطب الإسلامي' له خصائصه الأساسية والتي ينبغي أن تكون منطلقا لمفاهيم الصحة والطب؟ ويتبنى المؤلف الرأي القائل بأن مفاهيم الصحة والطب لا يمكن أن تنفصل عن العقائد الوجودية والنظم الأخلاقية السائدة سواء في المجتمعات القديمة أو الحديثة.

This paper was presented to the second international conference on Islamic medicine held in March 1982 in Kuwait. The main question of this paper asks whether it is sufficient for Muslims to reach the level of Western civilization in the scientific, technical and moral aspects of medicine or whether the concept 'Islamic medicine' possesses its own fundamental characteristics on which the notions of health and medical policy should be based. The author argues that concepts of health and medicine are inseparably related to the existential beliefs and moral systems prevailing in both ancient and modern societies.
