The book surveys the medical profession in Islamic history and civilization. It consists of eight chapters: medicine in pre-Islamic times; medicine in the early period of Islam; women's contribution to medicine and healing; medicine during the Umayyad period; medicine during the Abbasid period and beyond; types of hospitals; physician’s conduct; and supervision of physicians and pharmacists.
