تعد شعيرة الحج إلى الأماكن المقدسة في مكة وما جاورها (وتطوعا إلى المدينة المنورة) الركن الخامس من أركان الإسلام. ودليل الحاج هذا والذي أصدرته المنظمة الإسلامية للعلوم الطبية معني بتقديم الإرشادات الأساسية الطبية والفقهية والأخلاقية لمن يرغب في أداء هذه الشعيرة. فعلى سبيل المثال يقدم هذا الدليل معلومات حول كيفية أداء الحج للسيدات أثناء فترة الحيض وللمسنين ولمن يعانون من أمراض معينة.

Islamic pilgrimage (ḥajj) to the holy places in Mecca and its vicinity (and voluntarily to Medina) composes the fifth of the basic pillars of Islam. This guide for pilgrims, published by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS), is meant to provide those who intend to perform this ritual travel with elementary medical, juristic and ethical guidelines. For instance, this guide includes information about performing the rituals of pilgrimage for women during their menstrual period, the aged and people who suffer specific diseases.
