Abstract
Abstract Translated
This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) in Kuwait during the period 18-21 April 1987 on some medical practices from an Islamic ethical perspective. Determining the minimum and maximum period of having menstrual or postnatal blood or pregnancy is crucial for different rulings in Islamic jurisprudence. The author reviews the opinions of classical Muslim religious scholars on these issues and concludes that no decisive scriptural text gives a final word on these issues. Hence, they all remain open for independent legal reasoning (ijtihād).
