ينطلق هذا المقال من فكرة أن النصوص الشرعية لم تصرح بكيفية تحديد لحظة الموت. ومن ثم فإن المعطيات الطبية لابد وأن تلعب دورا حاسما في هذا الصدد. ويناقش المقال بشكل مفصل النقاشات التي دارت بين علماء الإسلام قديما حول العلاقة بين الروح والجسد وكيف صاغوا مفهوما للموت في عصورهم. ويخلص الباحث إلى أن موت الدماغ ينبغي أن يعد ضابطا مقبولا للموت من وجهة نظر إسلامية.

The starting point of this article is that the scriptural texts are silent about how to determine the exact moment of death. Thus, medical knowledge should play a decisive role in this regard. The article elaborates in detail on the early discussions of Muslim religious scholars about the soul-body relationship and their understandings of death in their times. The main conclusion is that brain death should be seen as an accepted death criterion from an Islamic perspective.
