قام الفقيه المصري، سعد الدين الهلالي، بتأليف هذا الكتاب بعد تواصل مباشر استمر لعدة سنوات مع مجموعة من المدمنين في أحد مستشفيات الكويت. وبعد الانتهاء من تأليف الكتاب تم عرضه على عبد الرحمن العوضي رئيس المنظمة الإسلامية للعلوم الطبية والذي رحب بفكرة نشر الكتاب ضمن سلسلة إصدارات المنظمة تحت عنوان 'الإسلام والمشكلات الطبية المعاصرة'. يبدأ الكتاب باستعراض المعنى اللغوي والاصطلاحي لعدد من المصطلحات الهامة مثل الخمر والأفيون والحشيش ثم يعطي لمحة تاريخية عن المشروبات الكحولية التي كانت معروفة عند العرب في الجاهلية. أما صلب الكتاب فيعالج الأحكام الفقهية الإسلامية المتعلقة بهذه المواد والمخدرات. وقد خصص الكتاب فصلا لتوضيح العلة وراء تحريم الخمر والمشروبات الكحولية في الإسلام.

The Egyptian religious scholar Sa<d al-Dín Hilålí wrote this book after direct contact with a group of addicts for a couple of years in one of the Kuwaiti hospitals. After finishing the book, he proposed it to ʻAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʻAwaḍī, the president of the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS), who welcomed the idea of publishing the book by the IOMS as part of its series 'Islam and current medical concerns'. The book starts by giving linguistic and juristic technical definitions for key terms such as wine, opium and hashish and then gives a historical review of the alcoholic beverages known to the Arabs in the pre-Islamic period. The core part of the book deals with the Islamic juristic rulings with pertinence to these substances and drugs. The author also dedicated a chapter to elaborating on the rationale of forbidding wine and alcoholic beverages in Islam.
